Intelligent Decisions (ID) offers advanced networking technologies and consulting services to support federal and commercial organizations transitioning from IPv4 to IPv6.
Transitioning from IPv4 to IPv6 is a challenge because both protocols are not interoperable. In order to make it cost effective and technically feasible for organizations to migrate their networks to IPv6, several transition mechanisms can be adopted to achieve interoperability. We have developed 3 transition solutions for deploying IPv6 in IPv4 dominant networks:
- Dual-Stack: Having nodes supporting IPv4 and IPv6 simultaneously. Here applications are supporting both protocols and the network is routing both protocols.
- Tunneling IPv6 in IPv4: A tunneling transition mechanism can be used to overlay a new protocol over a legacy one. Tunneling is used to encapsulate IPv6 datagrams over an IPv4 network.
- Translation: For devices that cannot be upgraded to support IPv6. Translation mechanism will allow communication between IPv6-only and IPv4-only nodes.
ID is on the forefront of developing IPv6 transition strategies and policies including a state of the art IPv6 testing lab to help our customers test new products. Through our test lab, we have developed services, solutions and upgrade plans for any organization. Our lab is available to government agencies for determining IPv6 compatibility, capability and interoperability for new solutions and products.
Nearly every industry is jumping on the IPv6 bandwagon because of its strong technical advantages:
- Increased address space (no more NAT)
- Globally addressable address space (no more DHCP)
- End to end security (no more VPNs)
- Automatic discovery of network resources (client-client)
